First of all, I am currently a fifth year student at GVSU, working towards a degree in special education. I will begin my teacher assisting in the fall of 2015 in a resource room in the Forest Hills district. I am excited for this new adventure to begin and to make the shift from learning from textbooks and professors, to learning from students and "real life." I am especially excited to gain hands on experience with students with emotional impairments. I have always had a special love and passion for this type of students, so EI will be one of my endorsement areas along with CI (cognitive impairments).
I chose the profession of teaching for many reasons. The first one being that I have always had a unique and deep sense to protect, care for and guide children. My childhood was not an easy one, forcing me to quickly grow up. Ever since then, I have filled my days with playing, instructing, caring for and protecting children, doing all that I can to allow kids to be kids while I am with them.Another reason I chose teaching was because of the teachers that impacted my life from elementary school until now. I had some remarkable teachers in elementary and high school who went above their call of duty to care for me both inside and outside of the classroom. I long for the day when I will be able to give back to my own students in ways that my teachers once gave to me.
Many people ask me why I chose special education versus general education and honestly, I don't have a clear answer to that. I knew I wanted to do special education after spending time tutoring students in an elementary resource room at Cummings Elementary. Their willingness and motivation to learn is inspiring. I love the extra challenges of teaching them because I see it as an opportunity to try new ideas, explore new techniques and implement a wide array of strategies.
Much of this blog will focus on technology and how it is used in the classroom by educators. Personally, I have little experience with incorporating technology into the planning process of teaching. I've created lesson plans and such that use YouTube videos, but my experience with planning for technology use, doesn't go much farther than that. I hope that through my research and reading, that I will learn more about what it looks like to plan for technology in the classroom.
As far as using technology in the classroom, I would say I am fairly comfortable with it. I have used a variety of technology as an aide in my learning process and have used technology many times for various projects and assignments since elementary school. With this blog, I hope to deepen my understanding of how technology can be used in beneficial ways in the classroom and the different ways in which I can help my students learn about technology.
Until next time,
Miss Bethany
